Today, I Went To Jail…

So…today was my company’s facility visit to Rikers Island. To my surprise, I was not at all scared or intimidated. I was actually pretty chill. It was definitely an experience and further re-enforcement that I want to continue with this career path, in conjunction with design, web design and photography.

I’ve been in the academy, no more than a week and we’ve learned so much. And today, we got the real life visual, for all that we’ve covered in class, thus far.

We saw the different posts, housing areas…we observed an institutional search after a fight broke out in a particular housing area. Went into a housing area, both single cell and dorm, amongst the inmates. Observed an inmate visit and inmate search. Assisted a C.O. on post with her total census count…I absorbed so much!

I saw my cousin, who’s an Officer. She spoke to us as well as other Officers, Captains and Deputies, informing us of the ins and outs, pros and cons of the job.

After today, although I’m very nervous about the paperwork aspect of the job, I’m very excited and anxious to graduate and start my tenure in a facility as a Correction Officer. Also, I can’t wait to go the range and get my Firearms Qualification! Oh! And get this money mayne!

I’m very proud to be on my way to being one of New York’s Boldest!
